The Midium

ROGER LINN DESIGN

Electronic music pioneer and Grammy winner Roger Linn, of Roger Linn Design, has changed the way artists communicate with their instruments––and thus, with their audiences––since the early 1980s.  As heard on countless tracks since, Linn's instruments gave electronic musicians new methods of creating drum beats and rhythms through their implementation of straightforward and interactive interfaces, various synthesis techniques, sequencers, and samples.  Since then, Roger Linn has developed interfaces that have influenced modern music––as seen from the early years of the classic MPC to today with the interactive LinnStrument––and continue to test the limits of MIDI and imagination.

Inspired by string instruments' expressiveness and structure, Roger Linn Design's LinnStrument and LinnStrument 128 are MIDI controllers that operate in five dimensions and can send MPE (or MIDI Polyphonic Expression) to their connected synths, drum machines, or other electronic musical instruments.  LinnStrument and LinnStrument 128's capabilities also include being able to serve as sequencers and arpeggiators, and artists may reprogram their functionality through their open source software.
